OK, I just picked up the Rulebook. Its pretty heavy. The desk is definitely not going to fly away.

Looks like lots of fun stuff :) Anyone else playing this right now? Care to share your experience?

We have just have about 6 sessions of it.

1. the setting appeals to us all in my group.
2. the rulesystem is poor, ranging from over simplistic to impossible to succeed.
3. the psi rules are too easy to abuse.
4. it is possibly one of the worst rulebooks I have ever had the misfortune to use.
a) why are talents so far away from the "classes'
b) why do the talent descriptions not include what classes they are for?
c) why are some of the rule mechanics actually the same but described differently?
d) why are some of the levels not even in order.

Overall I love the game, but I hate the rulebook. It is a wonderful example of poorly designed rules, incompetent editing by a publisher and a sloppy developer.

Yikes!

Like you, I'm really intrigued by the Dark Heresy setting, but the rules have really turned me off it. I have briefly considered trying to adapt the D&D 4e rules to the setting though as I think they could possibly be a good fit.

Lots of bile has been flung at D&D 4e but hate it all you want, you can't criticise it for being poorly supported. Just this week there were several hundred revisions and errata fixes included in the Character Builder and a PDF documenting every change along with a reason for each change.

Not my criticism though,
and I am far from angry with it. I think Pathfinder fills the gap I am happy with, so D&D4E is a nonissue.

When I read through the core rulebooks, I felt that the rules focused too much on combat, and not enough on the roleplaying aspects that I find more appealing.

I just did not feel I was their audience anymore
So I just put my energies into other systems instead.

it basically has the same rules as Warhammer Fantasy - published all those years ago - the rules are flawed - but i am yet to see a system that isnt.
Really depends on the GM to run it correctly -

as a noob to play table top RPG's, i don't see why these rules are flawed.

the use of 2d10 (d100) i find very appealing as it can be viewed than percentage. you instantly know how likely an event is in percentage (proportions) terms.

example: if i have an intelligence of 32, i known that 32% of the time i will suceed at normal test. and it is easy to adjust for this.

i started reading the d20 rules for 4ed and i don't see what is so great about them. your dependant on two different numbers for attack roles from two entites. While in this system, a dodge is an independant event and thus you can figure the probability easily with baynes rule.

so could someone explain what is so good about the D20 system? or is it just that everyone knows the system and got use to it?

i really want to get in a game into this, still LFG.

besides, a games theme can make up alot for gameplay (not everything)

Yeah , my issue is that if you have say a 32 intelligence - it means that 58 percent of the time you fail!
Other than that , I do like the system - and the setting - even downloaded a neat fan made Career path for Space Marines.
Just got Rogue Trader too - similar to Dark Heresy but you start at a much higher level -
I would run it if I got enough people that wanted to play.

firstly, you fail 68% of the time. 58+32 is 90 :P (finally, a use for that math stuff)

that is part of its charm. it is not a tale of epic powerhouse, hence no space marines, your meant to be a above average individual fighting against the enemies of the emperor in a cruel and dark world.
besides, a smart GM can make these easier but adjusting tests. this can be done for innovation and creative idea of the individual. rewards for investigation, etc

the lack of hits helps as there is limited healing (psychic healing is the fastest you can get), huge critical damage, etc

Rogue trader, on the face of it i love, my fantasy has always to be a brave space adventure charting between planets for profit. However, it does hit me as well.

The huge ships with crew means that you could have heaps of individuals helping you. The characters are very beffed up meaning you start out pretty awesome and so its less of a struggle against the universe for survive.

starship combat sounds like it rocks.

the psychic powers are less fun as their are less discplines and the system seems to mean that all powers are similar in difficulty.

and something about the theme seems less fun then fighting against impossible odds against the enemies of the emperor.

i really wish i could find a group, so i can play instead of dream of playing
